i know i've mixed 'one in a million' plenty, but this is the only mashup to ever make me cry. i've dreamt of what it would sound like and it's BEAUTIFUL. there were never any stems for 'the distance', but tonight i made it work. I've had the idea to mix mariah carey's 'the distance' with aaliyah's 'one in a million' ever since 'caution' came out. i really wish they could have collaborated. it's ethereal, beautiful, with a hip hop touch. maybe that's why this combination of sonics hits me so hard. just two weeks later, aaliyah was no longer here on earth, and it was mariah carey who reached out to aaliyah's fans on her website.
Just before aaliyah passed away, she sent her well wishes to mariah carey (she was always a huge fan) - who was undergoing a hard time personally and in the media.
